PWG member since 2005
After not working for many years, Awilda Otero came to Dress for Success in 2005 for help with her résumé and an interview suit when she was seeking employment to help support her family.  A mother of a young daughter, now 7, and a teenage son, she knew she needed to enter workforce to ease the burden of raising this young family.  She landed a job as a school bus driver, but returned to Dress for Success to attend the “Success is Working” Diversity Career Fair, participate in mock interviews and attend Professional Women’s Group meetings.

In November 2007, Awilda’s husband Ramon died suddenly. She felt alone and overwhelmed as she mourned her loss and struggled to comprehend life as a single mother. Awilda says that one of her first moments of comfort occurred when she received a sympathy card from the staff of Dress for Success. She realized at that moment that she has friends and colleagues who will always support her. At the same time, she knew it was now all the more important that she be a positive role model to her kids – and be for them an example of personal success and strength.  The suits go a long way in helping to provide that inner strength, but Awilda fimly believes it is the relationships that carry you through the very hard and dark times.

Awilda has remained active in the PWG, calling it a “sisterhood.” She says conversations with other single mothers have helped her to start to deal with the challenges ahead of her.
